about

We have all witnessed some of the darkest moments in the history of Haiti. At 4:53pm on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake tore through Haiti's capital city of Port-au-Prince and neighboring settlements. As people in Ottawa turned to the news and updates poured in, time stood still in our OWN city, as we watched with broken hearts and felt helpless and devastated by the images we were seeing. Haiti has suffered for centuries with lack of infrastructure, poverty and violence only to be devastated further by this natural disaster unlike any other in the past 200 years. The sheer resilience and spirit of the people in Haiti have kept the island nation going through many rough times in history. This might just be the worst time we are all witnessing. As all of Ottawa watched, many immediately wanted to assist. A group of very generous local musicians had a show on that January evening at the Elmdale House Tavern in Ottawa. Without hesitation they donated the proceeds from their show on the spot (as did the bar's owner) to Hope For Haiti. Clearly, Ottawa artists and performers do not have excess funds to donate - but they are moved by the call for help, and they can donate what is near and dear to their hearts: their time, and their art.

This was how Ottawa For Haiti came to be.

Purchasing this compilation CD helps Hope For Haiti to continue to do their work from inside the devastated region as they have for the past 20 years. When giving donations to Third World countries it is key to give to groups that can distribute the aid most effectively. In order to have quick impact, you should give cash instead of goods in order to provide assistance where the communities know it is needed most. Hope For Haiti makes this their mandate.

Thank you for supporting Ottawa For Haiti.
